How governments can create jobs

Should the government create jobs? This is a complex and controversial question. For some, yes. For others, no. In their view, the government provides important services that allow businesses to compete on an equal playing field. Each person's answer will rely on their own values and priorities. But whether we view government as beneficial or harmful depends in large part on how we feel about individual entrepreneurs and the opportunities they create.

Government actions often have unintended consequences. Such is the case with job creation. Many individuals believe that if the government creates jobs, then these jobs will be well-paid and therefore more plentiful. It is often assumed that when aggregate demand exceeds supply, prices will fall. The opposite occurs when aggregate supply exceeds demand. When unemployment rises, people rush to obtain jobs--but only if there are available jobs that pay well enough to bring them out of poverty.

Here are some solutions

·        The way I see it, there are two parts to the solution to our unemployment problem. The first part is a government action, which includes increased funding for job training and education. The second part is an individual action, which includes looking for jobs that are available and being willing to take them.

·        There are a good number of job adverts out there and not a lot of people applying for them because they feel they will not get them. When unemployment is high, people become more interested in jobs they can actually get. If people don't want to apply for jobs, it's more likely that businesses won't create them. The government should create more job opportunities by investing in people's education and training so they have the skills needed after graduation instead of waiting until they become laid off or have retired.

·        What if Kenyans had more well-paid jobs? What if the government gave everyone a small 5000ksh loan to start a business or buy a product? How many people would get the credit? How many businesses would startup? This could end up being a very expensive process

·        We need decent-paying jobs for people to be able to take care of themselves and their families. Government should focus on creating good schools for our children so that they have an advantage over those who go to school outside of their communities. Government should also focus on health care which is vital for attracting and retaining employees.
